Patients who continue to suffer from dental diseases eventually come to a place of frustration. It is often a reason why patients move from dentist to dentist, and distrust of the dentist and recommendations will be an issue. Partly for this reason, in my office we spend great effort preparing a document for the purpose of explaining the “situation as it is, including causes” for the new patients. [Also, where appropriate, we do the same for our continuing care patients upon the 5-year x-ray exam.] By doing this comprehensive examination and evaluation, we have a good knowledge what the problems are and the causes behind them. This is the secret to preventing further breakdown, and will STOP the disease process. In some cases, this is a revelation for the patient to “see the truth” for the first time. Often this precipitates a lifestyle change.
